Where To Find Part-Time Jobs In New Zealand
Job boards
Use Seek, Trade Me Jobs, Indeed and LinkedIn to find part-time vacancies near you. Student Job Search (SJS) and NZUni Talent focus on students and graduates.
University Careers Services
Your university or education provider can help with CVs, interview practice and vacancies. Ask the student support or careers team about campus jobs before your semester starts.
Recruitment Agencies
Agencies such as Hays, Madison and Randstad place people in temporary roles. They will ask you to confirm your right to work and your visa conditions before any placement.
Walk-Ins
Visit cafes, restaurants and shops during quieter hours with a printed CV. Ask the manager about part-time work and say clearly how many hours your visa allows.
Tips For Balancing Part-Time Work And Studies
- Log your hours. Keep a weekly note of every shift across all jobs so you never pass 25 hours.
- Cap your hours in exam weeks. Working fewer hours than the limit is always allowed and protects revision time.
- Ask for rosters two weeks ahead. Share your timetable and exam dates at the interview so shifts avoid your classes.
- Protect attendance. Your visa is for full-time study, so missing a lecture for a shift costs more than the pay.
- Use your breaks. If your visa allows full-time work in scheduled breaks, four 40-hour weeks at minimum wage pay NZD 3,832 before tax.
- Check every payslip. Look at your hourly rate, hours and tax and contact Employment New Zealand if something is wrong.
- Know your rights. Your employer must give you a written agreement, pay at least the minimum wage and give paid annual holidays.
