Application Planning Calendar
On-Campus (Halls Of Residence)
A room in a university hall, either catered with meals or self-catered. Many first-year students start here, so apply early. In 2026 the yearly cost of catered first-year halls at Auckland, Otago, Victoria and Canterbury ran from about NZD 19,700 to NZD 30,600.
Homestay
A room in a local family home with meals usually included. It suits students who want support in the first months, though some homestays are further from campus. Check the travel time and ask your university about its homestay service before you book.
Flatting (Private Rental Share)
A room in a shared house or flat from a landlord. Rent is paid weekly and the bond can be up to four weeks’ rent. The University of Canterbury estimates about NZD 200 a week for rent in a four-bedroom house in Ilam, Christchurch.
